Is St. Louis, Missouri a gay-friendly city?

I'm doing my college research and Washington University in St. Louis has caught my attention. However, from a few searches I've done, it does not look very gay-friendly. I'm from Los Angeles, so I want to go somewhere where I don't have to hide who I am. Is St. Louis the place?
